In order to support the development of Confucius Institutes, facilitate Chinese language promotion and Chinese cultural transmission in the world, cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language, Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program to provide financial aid for students, scholars and Chinese language teachers worldwide to proceed to a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) in Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as "host institutes"), or study in such majors as Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.

Targeted students:

  • Students in Confucius Institute (Classroom) programs worldwide;
  • Teachers or individuals who will become teachers who are planning to teach Chinese as a second language;
  • Students who received an outstanding score on the Chinese proficiency test held by the Confucius Institute Headquarters;
  • Outstanding contestants in the “Chinese Bridge” competition;
  • Selected persons who meet Confucius Institute Headquarters requirements.

Scholarship categories and criteria:

  • Scholarship for short-term Chinese study- 1 semester:

This scholarship funds an academic semester. Must enter program by fall 2013 or spring 2014 and study for 1 semester. Applicants should achieve a score of at least 120 on the HSK (level 2) and at least 40 on the HSKK (elementary level). In general, applicants must have basic Chinese language proficiency and not be over 55 years old.

  • Scholarship for short-term Chinese study- 1 year:

This scholarship funds an academic year. Must enter program by fall 2013 and study for one academic year. Applicants should achieve a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level), or complete their study at a Confucius Institute for over 120 hours.

  • Scholarship for a Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (MTCSOL):

This scholarship funds up to 2 years of study. Must enter program by fall 2013. Applicants are required to have a bachelors degree or equivalent education with a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level).  Applicants must make a written commitment stating that he/she will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation. Hanban will provide support for outstanding graduates to return to their countries to teach.

Supported fields of study:

  • During 2012, Confucius Institute scholarships supported fields of study including language and literature, education (teaching the Chinese language), Chinese history and Chinese philosophy.

Scholarship benefits and amounts:

  • Pays for tuition, dormitory fee, and basic medical treatment.
  • Pays for comprehensive medical insurance while studying in China.
  • Pays a one-time relocation stipend (does not apply to applicants applying or enrolling from China). Standard amounts:

    1. If studying for a full academic year: 1500 RMB

    2. If studying for more than a semester but less than an academic year: 1000 RMB

    • Pays a monthly stipend for living expenses. Standard amounts:

      1. Short-term studies student: 1400 RMB

      2. Master’s degree student: 1700 RMB

      Application materials:

      • Applicants must submit the following applications materials (in duplicate):

        1. Confucius Institute Scholarship application

        2. Passport photo page (copy)

        3. Personal statement: includes applicant’s Chinese language background, plan to study in China, etc., not to exceed 200 words; English or Chinese may be used. A signature is required. Applicants applying for the master’s scholarship must list their study and research plans.

        4. Certificate of Chinese language proficiency (copy): Applicants for the master’s degree scholarship must submit a copy of their HSK test results.  

        5. Academic diploma (copy) and transcripts (sealed and issued by the registrar’s office): If documents are in a language other than Chinese or English, a certified translation into English or Chinese must be included. Academic degree scholarship applicants must send two letters of recommendation from professors or associate professors. Letters must be written in English or Chinese.

        Approval:

        • Confucius Institute Headquarters will notify the Chinese university of the results by June 15, 2013.
        • The university will send notification and the scholarship certificate to scholarship recipients.

         

        Registration:

        • Scholarship recipients must register with their Chinese university by the specified deadline. Recipients who fail to do so will have their scholarships revoked.

        2013年度孔子学院奖学金招生办法

        为支持孔子学院建设,促进汉语国际推广和中国文化传播,培养合格的汉语教师和各类汉语人才,孔子学院总部/国家汉办(以下简称汉办)设立孔子学院奖学金,资助外国学生、学者和汉语教师到中国有关高等学校(以下统称“接收院校”)攻读汉语国际教育专业硕士学位,或学习汉语言文学、中国历史、中国哲学专业。

        招生类别及申请条件

        1. 汉语国际教育专业硕士 向孔子学院(课堂)优秀学员,海外本土汉语教师、HSK考试成绩优秀者,“汉语桥”世界大、中学生中文比赛优胜者,各国大学中文专业优秀毕业生提供,入学时间为2013年秋季,资助期限为2学年。申请者应具有学士学位或相当学历,HSK成绩不低于五级180分、HSKK成绩不低于中级50分,同时书面承诺毕业后至少从事5年汉语教学工作。有具体任教意向者(须提供拟任教单位出具的证明)将被优先录取。汉办将为优秀毕业生回国任教提供支持。

        2. 一学年研修+汉语国际教育专业硕士 向非洲和拉美地区有志于从事汉语教学工作的孔子学院学员提供。申请者须与孔子学院或拟任教单位签订协议,应具有学士学位或相当学历,HSK成绩不低于三级180分、HSKK成绩不低于初级60分;第一学年结束前通过年度评审且汉语能力取得HSK五级180分以上成绩者,可继续在华攻读汉语国际教育专业硕士学位。汉办将为毕业回国任教者提供支持,如,招聘为本土汉语教师并给予工资补贴等。

        3. 一学年研修生 向孔子学院(课堂)优秀学员,“汉语桥”世界大、中学生中文比赛优胜者,海外本土汉语教师、大学中文专业优秀毕业生、HSK考试成绩优秀者,或有志于从事国际汉语教育的人士提供,学习专业包括汉语言文学、中国历史和中国哲学,入学时间为2013年秋季,资助期限为一学年。申请者HSK成绩须不低于三级180分、HSKK成绩不低于初级60分,或在孔子学院学习时间达到120学时以上。

        4. 一学期研修生 向孔子学院(课堂)优秀学员,“汉语桥”世界大、中学生中文比赛优胜者,海外本土汉语教师、大学中文专业优秀学生、HSK考试成绩优秀者提供,学习专业包括汉语言文学、中国历史和中国哲学,入学时间为2013年秋季或2014年春季,资助期限为一学期。申请者HSK成绩须不低于二级120分、HSKK成绩不低于初级40分,或在孔子学院学习时间达到60学时以上。

        各类别奖学金优先资助具有HSK和HSKK成绩者。 “汉语桥”比赛来华复赛获奖选手按奖项规定内容办理入学申请手续。申请者若重复提交申请材料,则视为无效。

        二、奖学金资助内容及标准

        孔子学院奖学金按资助内容包括:注册费、学费、基本教材费、一次性安置费、生活费,提供住宿、门诊医疗服务和来华留学生综合保险。其中,生活费标准是:一学期和一学年研修生人民币1400元/月;汉语国际教育专业硕士生人民币1700元/月。一次性安置费标准是:发给在华学习时间为一学年(含)以上者人民币1500元/人;发给在华学习时间为一学期者人民币1000元/人;录取前已在华学习半年以上者,不再发给一次性安置费。

        三、招生流程

        1.自本办法发布之日起,申请者可登陆孔子学院奖学金网站(http://cis.chinese.cn)注册个人账号,查询接收院校及专业信息,在线填写、提交《孔子学院奖学金申请表》。

        2. 汉办委托各国孔子学院(独立设置的孔子课堂),有关海外汉语考试考点,中国驻外使(领)馆教育、文化处(组),接收院校和未建孔子学院国家的有关高等学校作为推荐机构,负责按招生要求审核属地申请者资格及申请材料,并于4月25日前将推荐名单汇总提交汉办。

        3. 接收院校负责审核申请者入学资格,并于5月25日前向汉办提交符合条件的奖学金留学生预录取名单。

        4.汉办将组织专家进行评审,对符合条件者择优录取。获奖者名单将于6月15日前在奖学金网站公布,同时通知接收院校和推荐机构,并由推荐机构通知申请者本人。

        5.接收院校须于7月1日前将《录取通知书》、《报到须知》、《外国留学人员来华签证申请表》(JW202表)等入学材料寄达推荐机构,由推荐机构转交申请者本人。

        四、申请材料

        申请者须登录奖学金网站,填写《孔子学院奖学金申请表》,并附上以下证明材料的电子文档:

        护照照片页。

        2.HSK、HSKK成绩报告。

        3.经过公证的最高学历或在校学习证明。

        4.推荐信及承诺书。未建孔子学院国家的有关高校中文专业学生,须另附校长签发的推荐信。汉语国际教育专业硕士申请者须同时提交两名副教授以上职称导师的推荐信(用中文或英文书写),以及毕业后至少从事5年汉语教学工作的承诺书(用中文书写并签名)。

        5.未满18周岁的申请者,须提交委托在华法定监护人的相关法律文件。

        6.“汉语桥”世界大、中学生中文比赛来华复赛获奖者须提供奖学金证书。各国分赛区优胜者须提供获奖证明和赛区主办单位出具的推荐函。

        7.在职汉语教师须提交就职机构出具的在职证明和推荐信。

        8. 申请“一学年研修+汉语国际教育专业硕士”连读学习的,须提交与孔子学院或拟任教单位签订的协议。

        9. 接收院校所需的其他证明材料。

        五、入学及年度评审

        1.奖学金获得者须根据接收院校规定按时到校报到。无故逾期未报到者,奖学金资格不予保留。

        2.入学体检不合格者,奖学金资格将被取消。

        3.按照《孔子学院奖学金年度评审办法》的规定,汉语国际教育专业硕士须在入学后第一学年结束前参加年度评审,符合条件者方可继续享受下一年度奖学金。
